Does Gamestop Buy Tablets

"We've seen research that says there's about $8 billion worth of used smartphones, iPod Touches, iPods and even tablets that are in people's homes that they're not using because they've bought the next model," Mike Mauler, executive vice president of GameStop told GamesIndustry.biz.

"The interesting thing with the buy-sell-trade model is it works when there's a constant cycle. And nowhere has a faster cycle than tablets and smartphones and so you've got that tremendous value out there that people have in their homes that they're not using.

While GameStop's press release focused on Microsoft's cloud services, office software, and advanced hardware (like the Surface tablet) as a means of refreshing its day-to-day operations, a new detail in that deal has just surfaced that's way bigger than Microsoft handing over a bunch of shiny new tablets.

It's difficult to overstate how this is a real game-changer for the way GameStop does business. By getting a piece of the digital pie, GameStop can keep stores operating in real-life. Additionally, the Microsoft deal also makes GameStop retailers a spot where gamers can sign up for Xbox Game Pass, similar to how cable and internet operators will still have physical stores to help with customers that just prefer the in-person experience.

The first sign of this new revenue-sharing arrangement actually came somewhat hidden in a press release GameStop issued last week, trumpeting a "Multi-year Strategic Partnership with Microsoft." That announcement focused heavily on GameStop agreeing to use Microsoft's cloud-based infrastructure for its back-end sales systems and a deal for store associates to start using Microsoft Surface tablets going forward.

But Chukumba told Ars he thinks GameStop's cut of digital sales is much lower, somewhere under one percent. "I don't believe it's large enough to make a significant impact on GameStop's financial results going forward," he said. "Largely, I don't believe that [it's a bigger cut] because what is Microsoft's incentive? I don't see what this does for Microsoft exactly. If they didn't have this, would they sell fewer Xboxes?"

To that end, Dopierala said he's "pretty confident" that Sony is already in talks with GameStop on a similar revenue-sharing deal to ensure Microsoft doesn't get preferential treatment in the stores. "I think Sony might be next in line," he said.

Chukumba balked at that idea. "It definitely doesn't include pre-owned [console sales]," he said. "No way. I didn't even ask [GameStop] the question because it's kind of ridiculous. I highly, highly, highly doubt that it includes pre-owned [consoles]."

In Chukumba's view, Microsoft has simply traded a minuscule chunk of some Xbox digital revenue in exchange for a GameStop commitment to use Microsoft's cloud products and tablets in its stores, as announced last week. "It's going to make Microsoft as a company look much better [to shareholders] with cloud revenue from GameStop," he said.

GameStop, already riding high on its used game sales, has been consistent in diversifying its offerings. The company previously purchased social game network Kongregate, started selling downloadable content and add-ons in stores, and recently purchased digital download store Impulse and game streaming service Spawn Labs. Now the company is setting its sights on what it believes to the next frontier: tablets.

If you are registering as an international buyer on GameStop Wholesale, we require some form of official documentation that shows the purchase is for export so we can ensure that sales tax does not need to be charged on your purchases. This can include an exporter's license, registration with the department of revenue with your country, or business registration form. If you have already registered, you can fax this form to (650) 241-3328 or email it to us. Please note that international buyers are responsible for arranging their own shipping on all transactions, and certain auctions may only be available to buyers in the United States. An additional $25 fee must be included on any international wire payment as well.

Please remember that every bid on B-Stock operated marketplaces is a binding contract. You are agreeing to buy the lot at the price you indicate should you ultimately be the high bidder. Bids may not be cancelled once submitted. If you accidentally enter a wrong bid amount (for example, you entered $1000 instead of $100) you can click on the Cancel link within the bid confirmation pop-up window to change your bid amount prior to submission. Changing your mind does not qualify as accidentally entering a wrong bid amount. Your bids affect how other users bid within the auction and the auction's final selling price. We provide ample opportunity for you to check and double check your bid before submitting, so requests to cancel bids will most likely result in the suspension of your account. A record of all bids is kept on file. If a current winning bid is disqualified in an auction for any reason, B-Stock will restore the next highest non-winning bid to winning status. This decision is made at the sole discretion of B-Stock Solutions.

GameStop does not accept coupon stacking on its website; customers may redeem one coupon code per order. However, some coupons may apply extra savings to already reduced prices, letting you stack discounts for the best deal.
